Saint Valentine’s Day in Japan

2863443450011778759uqpdgo_fs.jpg

In Japan, It is a day to give chocolate to a favorite boy from a girl. The boy got chocolate is a thing same as what he was said to love from a girl. In our custom, there is a duty to give a chocolate, too. Women  must  give chocolate to men that women usually  take care of , for example, a brother , father, boss, co-worker, etc. There are more people who don’t give chocolate, because chocolate costs have, and the men who get chocolate have to give candy or presents back to women. They each spend a lot of money. Do you think custom is strange?

Kolter and George’s Trap

This is a true story. On Kolter’s typical Sunday he has to have a conversation. That is the time when Kolter expresses himself in all different ways, sharing all his deep thoughts about life and humankind. Most of the time he only had one listener that was himself. Until one day, those empty conversations began to be full of joy because of his buddy George. Kolter really liked George, you could tell that by watching Kolter spending, no kidding, SPENDING, money on Cheetos for George. Kolter and George met a long time ago.

Kolter had just bought his new home. To know what his house is really like, you must not use the word new, and look at the home as many pieces of wood put them together with nails. But Kolter loved that place at first sight, because it had a tremendous green area. Kolter couldn’t wait to move in. He signed the contract and promptly went to take his home as a conqueror. That was where he met George. When Kolter looked at George, he couldn’t see any beauty in him. Kolter just saw an invader of his property. Kolter ran out to buy as many traps and cheese as he could. He was fast and furious. He came home with one trap and one borrowed slice of Kraft cheese from a neighbor. The true story was he didn’t spend a nickel. He found the trap on the street, and he knew that trap was working really well because it still had pieces of an earlier victim in it. Smart Kolter had won again, without spending any money. He had a trap and cheese. Kolter was arranging everything to show to George why his nickname was CNC, that stands for cheap and cruel.

Kolter had put the trap in the center of the kitchen with just a quarter of the cheese. Because Kolter was saving the rest to return later to his neighbor. Kolter enjoyed using his math ability, plus his giant knowledge about rodents. Kolter’s way of thinking was very easy to follow. He thought, “Why should I spend a whole slice of cheese on that thing, when a quarter will do the same job?” One thing is for sure. If Kolter is the host of a party, it’ll never be any kind of feast, just enough food to keep people alive. And Kolter uses as an excuse to explain his stinginess, the fact of gluttony being one of the seven deadly sins. In his books, Kolter always finds a way out. Unbelievably, he explained his cheap ways based on holy words. How could anyone argue with such a genius? But George was very clever. He didn’t put his head on the line for a quarter of cheese. Instead he found an old trap in the attic. George put it in Kolter’s room and as bait a single shinny penny.
In the morning, when kindly Kolter woke up and saw that penny in the trap, he didn’t think twice. He put his hand on the trap, as he was trying to liberate that poor coin. The next moment, a scream broke the silence, after Kolter used all the curse words that he knew and a couple that he created at that excruciating moment. He looked at his hand and saw blood. He saw his right hand covered in blood and he begun to count his fingers, but unfortunately the final number was four. Because his fifth one was on George’s hand. George was lifting as a trophy Kolter’s finger. Kolter was defeated not by a rat but by a penny. After George realized that Kolter had learned an important lesson, he gave the finger back to Kolter.

Kolter took it and carefully cleaned and put it in a bag of ice. Kolter had stopped his bleeding hand using some Kleenex. Then he went out looking for a not big-box store. After three painful hours driving around, he found a store, which didn’t go against his business beliefs. He went there to buy some super glue and sticky tape. Kolter came home and applied the super glue in his hand. Then he precisely reattached his severed finger, and he finished reuniting his finger to his hand using the sticky tape. George was petrified. He was scared to death by that glued man, and he thought, “I’m leaving now!” George was so confused by Kolter’s action that he didn’t watch his way out of the house. George was trying to run away from Kolter, but he went right to Kolter’s quarter of cheese trap. Kolter heard a noise and went to see what happened.

Kolter saw his earlier enemy on the kitchen floor divided in half. Kolter dropped one single tear, and he, like a flash, went to pick up his first aid kit. Kolter bent down and was shocked, because George started to talk. George was saying many words, at the same time, something like this, “No! No! No! you are a lunatic! Don’t you dare glue me and tape me together! Please, I want a vet, an animal doctor! Don’t touch me! Don’t put glue on me. I prefer to die! Are you listening to me?”

The answer to the question, of course, was no. Kolter hardly listened to others. He understood what he wanted to, and it was that George would rather die than to see a vet, because they’re lunatics and he was begging Kolter to take good care of him. Kolter, the generous, had accepted that mission. He was once more using super glue and sticky tape. Kolter was trying to save that poor little guy’s life. Kolter struggled to do it right and in order not to mess with George’s guts, he was using a book as his guide to that complicated surgery. Because Kolter couldn’t leave any tape inside of George, he had to glue the guts really well, and he had to be sure that it would work too. Kolter had decided to keep out of George’s body, all his guts for at least for 24 hours. Eighteen hours had passed. Then George started to collapse. Kolter had to think quickly, something hard to Kolter. He put everything back into George’s body, plus a little piece of a rabbit’s foot, for good luck. Then he taped George up and down.

One week later, George showed signs that he was becoming better, and he may was thankful to Kolter, because he had stopped calling Kolter some unpublishable words. That experience had changed Kolter a lot. He learned to use his left hand to compensate for the loss of some abilities of the right one. He really became ambidextrous, except that he only shakes hands with his left hand and he never washes his right hand with hot water. Unlike Kolter’s fears about losing his finger again, George was fearless about falling in half again, because he knew that Kolter forever would have more glue and tape. Kolter had finally found someone to listen to all his crazy stuff. They spent many hours of their Sundays in philosophical conversations, using many rhetorical questions. Who could imagine that George, who came from the bush outside, would became one of the biggest influences in Kolter’s life. A strong friendship began, and it would lead us to one of Kolter’s adventures.

P.S. Dr. Gregory House is the #1 doctor, but Kolter without any medical training could be easily the #2.

An Annual Event in Japan

Setsubun
Setubun
Setubun literally means “the day betweeen two season”.  People celebrate Setubun on either the 3th or 4th of february, the last day of winter, and the day before the first spring day in the lunar calender.
On this day, the “Bean-throwing Ceremony” called mamemaki is held at
temples and shrines.  Celebrities who are  “Toshiotoko (a man who was born under the zodiac sigh for that year ) ” are invited to throw these beans.  In this evening, people throw roasted soybeans inside and outside their houses shouting, “Oniwa-soto, Fukuwa-uchi!” meaning  “Devil out, Happiness in!”, and then they eat the same number of beans as their age, and wish for good health.
Also, we face the direction of good luck on this year and grab rolled sushi, making wishes, called  “Eho-maki”.  To make a rolled sushi means  ” catch wishes”.  If you cut the rolles sushi, wishes will run away.

So, Don’t cut it!  Just grab it!

INTRODUCTION OF OUR CLASS

Welcome to our English room!   We are students who came from a foreign country and study English.  Students came from various countries:  Mexico, Colombia, India, Burma, Japan etc… Someone came here to marry an American, another one came here for a husband’s job in the U.S.A, and the other one escaped from her country and came here to start a new life. When we came here, no one could speak English well.  But everyone struggled to make our life in the U.S.A. happier.  And now, we can enjoy chatting in English with friends. I can learn new words from this chatting.  Of course studying English is very hard and difficult, but being here with my friends is fun and happy to me.If you are interested in our class, please respond to us.  It’ll give us the opportunity to learn new words and have new friends. I’ll write about our teacher next time.

Kolter and the Old Man’s Bag

 Can’t Beat Trying

This is a true story. In a beautiful and sunny morning a young man named Kolter was in a bank. He was trying to get some money to support the release of his very first album. Kolter, well-known to be lacking in talent, had his request denied. He was completely disturbed by the news that he would never accomplish his dream to become a singer. He went home and grabbed all the songs that, for so long, he had been writing and his guitar. He was going to the bank to do a nonviolent protest. He had planned everything. He thought, “I’m going to be there and show to every single person my potential, then there will be no reason to my loan be denied.” Yes, he was ready to torture anyone at the bank, until they cannot take anymore notes and with no other solution, and using their last breath they will have to agree to give him everything, just to make sure that he’ll shut up. No doubts about, he sure is smart to threaten people with his “melodic” voice. But on his way to the bank he saw something that changed his plans.

When the cab that he was in stopped at the traffic light, he saw an old man crossing the street and dropping a bag. Kolter, famous for his gold heart, got off to the cab and grabbed that bag, he tried to catch up that senior citizen but he couldn’t. At that moment clumsy Kolter realized that he had left in the cab his guitar and songs, so it would be quite impossible to protest against the bank. Kolter went home to forget such a bad day. At home he begun to remember how everything went wrong, and Kolter was so devastated by those facts, that he deiced to put an end to his miserable life. He hanged a rope and went for it, but it didn’t work just because he is very cheap, and cheap people don’t have decent ropes. Kolter was lying on the floor alone and in so much pain, when he suddenly realized that the old man’s bag had ripped and he could see inside of it. Kolter was shocked because that bag was full of Benjamins, he couldn’t believe it, but he was so relieved because he understood the why of that horrible day, that almost finish tragically, happened. Deeply in his heart he knew he had a purpose in his life, he had to return the bag to that old man.

Next morning, Kolter went to the place where he saw, for the last time, the old man. He didn’t want to call the cops because he really liked to do everything by himself. Without anyone’s help, he had continued to look for that man. After days searching, Kolter finally saw him again. The old man got in a cab. Kolter did the same and followed him to a big house in the country.

Kolter waited outside until to get dark, then he broke into the house, and he put carefully all the money on the table. After that, Kolter had decided that as soon that old man wakes up, he would feel that God had been watching after him. Kolter was very exciting, with the opportunity for the first time in his life, to make someone truly happy. Kolter had begun to make the best breakfast ever for that old man. But Kolter had zero cooking skill, and he spent all the old man’s food in many creative recipes. When the food was too salty Kolter added sugar to it gets tastier, when it was too sweet he was adding salt, then he was baking and frying everything. He was doing so many things at the same time that, when he had finished, everything had a black and hard crust around it. But he didn’t stop there, after he set the dinner table with all that crunch food, he started to make a cozy house by turning on the fireplace. Kolter was putting more and more wood in the fireplace, and the fire was becoming bigger and bigger, but soon there wasn’t left any wood. Kolter went out to pick up more wood, as soon as he came back the fire had spread in the living room. Kolter dropped all the wood and went to look for the old man, while he was searching he saw in that old walls many pictures of the old man’s life all the pictures had as landscape that now burning house. Kolter finally found the old man sleeping, he was holding, as a kid, a miniature of his lovely house. The police arrived along with the firemen and Kolter explained everything, the officers were particularly nauseous about the Kolter’s way to prepare food.

Kolter was in jail. Later he had been released to wait for his trial at home. Kolter’s trial begun, and he became to be aware of what he had done. The old man told the court about that house. The house that his father built with his on hands, in the way that his mother dreamed about, when she was a little girl. He told them how was to grow up there and to raise his kids, and after the accident, that fatally killed his wife and kids, that house was the only thing that he had in the entire world. That house was the closest thing, as a family, to him, all his best memories happened there. When was Kolter’s turn to speak, an anxious Kolter told the court all his good intentions. He in detail told the jurors, how he made to the old man the meal, that he should never forget it. The prosecutor showed as evidence of the case the food. The food was the only thing that survived to the fire. It was untouchable, that crunch stuff around the food really had protected it against the fire. When the old man was asking about the money, he told with tears in his eyes that, the money should be use to build a new wing at the children’s hospital. But the money had been consumed, as each old man’s belongings, by fire. Kolter’s attorney was doing a good job. He was making clear how clumsy he was by telling in court all kind of awkward stories.

At the end of the week Kolter was declared guilty, and his sentence was to be holding in a mental institution, because he couldn’t think straight. Kolter was relieved he knew that he really needed a break, to get his life together and to practice more his guitar that he got back while the trial was on. He apologized to the old man by singing, one of his favorite songs. When the director of the mental institution heard Kolter he said to the judge, “No way! We cannot have him, the patients already have enough problems, it’s not fair with them, they don’t deserve it!” The judge had not other option than to set Kolter free. Before that, Kolter had to give to a corporation the rights of his strange way to make food, because fire specialists were sure about that, they had never seen something be so resistant to fire. He signed the papers and he made the world a safe place. Today, many products have in their composition the K agent. The money of the royalties went to build another house to the old man and to a new wing at the children’s hospital. Kolter didn’t receive a dime and he also didn’t record his album. It was fair enough!

Ps. Kolter was so ashamed, that he forgot everything. Don’t even try to ask him about it, because he sure will deny.
